Online dating is a trend that is becoming very popular throughout the United States. Each year the amount of money spent by consumers for online dating increases dramatically. By 2011, it is expected that residents of the U.S. will spend more than 930 million dollars for online dating sites and personal ads. Studies have shown that the most popular online dating sites pair people based on factors such as race, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs. As the popularity of online dating grows, so does the success rates associated with this activity. Each year the number of people who find a partner online and engage in a serious relationship with this partner increase significantly.
Although people of all ages use the Internet for online dating, the most popular group to use this are people between the ages of twenty and forty. These people are more comfortable with the Internet as a whole because they have been exposed to it for most of their lives. Older people with less Internet experience are less likely to pursue this type of dating, as they are anxious about using technology they are not experienced with.
Online dating is preferred by many because it provides a way to filter prospective dates. Most dating sites ask those who sign up to answer a detailed survey about themselves and the person they would like to meet. The site then goes to work to match people up according to their likes, dislikes, and other criteria. Online dating is a great way for people to browse possible matches and decide which ones they would like to contact. It also saves people from the embarrassment of face-to-face rejection.
In order to be successful at online dating, there are a few basic online dating tips that should be followed.
1. The first tip is to answer any surveys or questions honestly. It does a person no good to lie on his or her profile and then to have those lies come to the surface during the course of a relationship.
2. Another basic piece of advice is to post good quality recent photos. The photograph that is chosen for a person’s profile picture should be the best representation of how he or she currently looks. Online daters do not like to be fooled by outdated or falsified photographs.
3. A good tip for those delving into the world of online dating is to take things slow. Just because two people have been chatting a lot online does not mean that they truly know each other.
4. When deciding to meet in person for the first time, it is important to make sure that the meeting place is somewhere very public with lots of people around. This is a safety measure all people should take when meeting someone in person for the first time.
5. When chatting with prospective dates, online daters should be sure not to include last names, addresses, phone numbers, or places of work.
6. It is important for online daters to be respectful to those they are chatting with. It is not respectful to make rude or lewd comments or to suddenly stop talking with someone when relationship interest fades. Everyone deserves at least an explanation.
7. As horrible as it sounds, it is important for online daters to be able to recognize married people. Studies have shown that more than a quarter of the registered online daters are also married. Married users will be secretive and irregular in their communication.
8. It is also important for an online dater to know when a relationship is going nowhere. If two people have chatted for weeks without mention of meeting in person, it is probably time to move on so that no additional time is wasted.
9. If someone does not respond to initial emails, an online dater should not continue to email this person. This most likely means that the person is not interested but is not respectful enough to send a short email stating this fact.
10. Finally, online daters should always be themselves. They should showcase their best qualities and always be honest when asked questions. This way a prospective partner will know that they are getting to know the real person behind the profile.
